Takengon berasal dari bahasa aceh "Tikungan" yang arti nya kelokan karena untuk menuju ke kota kecil ini harus melewati tanjakan perbukitan dan menelusuri lereng lereng gunung dengan jalan berkelok kelok yang terjal dan curam penuh pepohonan lebat sepanjang jalan, untuk menuju ke ibukota kabupaten Aceh Tengah ini bisa melalui jalan Lintas Timur Sumatera ex Jl KKA Aceh Utara atau melalui kabupaten Bireuen dan harus melewati 2 gunung aktif di kabupaten Bener Meriah.
Danau Laut Tawar, itulah nama yang diberikan suku asli Gayo buat danau seluas 5472 hektar ini. Danau Laut Tawar ibarat hamparan permadani berwarna biru kalo kamu lewat di atasnya dengna naik heli atau pesawat, mirip seperti sisa-sisa air laut yang terjebak di daratan saat terjadi badai besar ribuan tahun silam.
Belum jelas kenapa danau yang berada di Kota Takengon, Aceh Tengah, Propinsi Aceh ini dinamakan Danau Laut Tawar. Mungkin karena luas banget seperti laut tapi airnya tidak asin alias tawar. Terus di sini juga tidak ada ombak atau pasang surut seperti di laut.
