Antarctica is turning green due to climate change

in #nature7 years ago

A group of biologists have discovered that parts of Antarctica are turning green as climate change is melting the southern part of the continent. They say their results are parallel to the effects observed in the Arctic, which is experiencing an increase in plant cover due to rising temperature of the climate.

The study, published in the journal Current Biology, shows how the researchers found some worrying trends in Antarctica: As the temperature has been rising, plants are being grown, particularly moss, which has increased significantly. As heat is expected to increase, this case is expected to expand, radically altering the ecosystem, soil and environment of the area.

"The temperature rises experienced more or less half a century ago in Antarctica have had a dramatic effect on moss banks growing in the region," says Dr. May Amesbury of the University of Exeter.

Antarctica has the record of being the windiest, driest and coldest place on Earth. As such, and despite its 14 million square kilometers, it harbors only 0.3% of the flora of the planet; However, what the research has found is that even a slight increase in temperature in this area will lead to rapid changes in vegetation cover, which will inevitably alter the ecosystem, biology and landscape of this remote and, Apparently, intact region.
