Mount Meru-Arusha National Park - Tanzania

Established in 1962, Mount Meru-Arusha National Park occupies 53 sq miles near the border with Kenya. It can be divided into three regions. North of Ngurdoto crater is woodland and bush, in which buffaloes, elephants, giraffes and rhinoceroses roam; in the center are the Momela lakes with their lush surrounding grassland; in the south is the crater of Mount Meru, Africa's fifth highest peak. Rainforest surrounds Ngurdoto center, which is 1 1/2 miles across, and the rim is a good spot from which to view the wide variety of wildlife it supports. The Momela lakes, where many animals go to drink, are also a good vantage point for observing wildlife.
