Amazing World - Gorge du Verdon
Gorge du Verdon - France
In the middle reaches of the Verdon River, which rises on Mont Pelat in the Alpes Maritimes and merges with the Durance, a tributary of the Rhone, lies a great gorge. The Gorge du Verdon, about 30 miles north-west of Cannes, is the largest in France: 12 miles long and 2300ft at its maximum depth. In some places, the gorge is only 20ft wide at the bottom. The gorge was formed by the river eroding the limestone plateau over which it flows and is one of the most spectacular in the series of gorges formed by the Verdon in this way.
