Tourist in Romania: Moldoveanu Peak

Moldoveanu Peak

If Danube Delta is the land with the lowest altitude in Romania (about sea level and even low) Moldoveanu Peak is the highest you can get here.
It's altitude is 2544 m and is situated in the Carpatian Mountains.

There are several ways you can get there, I've been twice on the same road because the altitude difference is bigger on a smaller distance and the views are quite spectacular, the area was once covered in ice and the force of it created beautiful valleys. This trail can be completed in one day, about 4 hours up and 3 down (or 5, if you choose a different trail back).

This mountains are the place of some protected and unique flowers. Unfortunately, some tourists ignore this and take them home as souvenirs.

You can see also beautiful shaped lakes, the one below is called the Triangle Lake...take a guess why :D

How to get here?

  1. Bucharest - Nucsoara - Stana lui Burnei (Burnei's Sheepfold)
My advice would be to ask in Nucsoara for someone to take you on the final point as the road is quite bad and you will need a powerful car you don't care about this last 20 km.

  1. There is another way to get on the peak but a longer one, starting from Balea Lake. Most foreigner tourists prefer that version as they can get by car to Balea Lake and from there, up in the mountains and then back. Personally, I'm not a big fan of sleeping in a tent at this altitude and this would be required as the trail is quite long, 1-2 full days.

@herverisson thanks for the comment. It is indeed even if in summer weekends the peaks can be quite crowded. But people are usually great and a lot of respect is shown to the nature and amoung climbers

looks like a great place for a hike

Looks so peaceful and pure :) Thanks for the photos!

Beautiful mountains, lake and flowers! Wonderful pictures!

:D I know I am fortunate to have this so close to home. Thank you

I love that ridge photo, looks like a fantastic place to hike.

If you ever reach Romania, put it on the list;)

He he he, I know that place! Pictures are very beautiful, but the reality It's much more beautiful. :) I've been here last summer.

Yes, it is, thank you for the comment. No camera can catch the real beauty and when hiking a phone camera is usually what we have. What part of the trail did you enjoyed the most?

@doitvoluntarily yes, it is, and not very difficult. Tomorrow I want to write about his smaller brother who is a lot harder to hike.
