Behind the charm of this lake, there is an interesting mystical side to note. The temple and lake are related to the legend of Mbah Monte, the magician of Majapahit who is believed to be the owner of this place. In this lake live dozens of black fish that supposedly is a fish gods hundreds of years old.
According to the story, there was a fight between Rahwana and the Dragon against Mbah Monte (Majapahit descendants). Although not balanced is 2 versus 1, but Mbah Monte is able to defeat the two enemies. Then mbah Monte cursed Rahwana and the Dragon became a temple with the shape of monkey and relief Dragon.
After that, Mbah Monte told his students to keep the temple, but some of his students did not obey his orders, Mbah Monte was furious and condemned his students to Sangkring Fish which is still in the lake and is known as the God of Gods.
These gods of numbers never diminish or increase from year to year. Therefore, the inhabitants of the area continue the mandate of their ancestors and continue to believe that the fish in the lake should not be caught let alone eaten. The surrounding community also believes only the calamity that will come if there is a desperate throw something let alone catch fish in this lake.
