পৃথিবীর জন্মলগ্ন থেকেই প্রকৃতি ভাঙ্গা ও গড়ার খেলা খেলে আসছে। নদীর ক্ষেত্রেও ব্যতিক্রম ঘটছে না।
নদীর পানিপ্রবাহ কমে পলি জমে ভরাট হওয়ার পাশাপাশি দখলের প্রতিযোগিতা ভয়াবহ অবস্থার সৃষ্টি করছে। 
নদীর বুকের ওপরেই নিমার্ণ করা হচ্ছে বিশাল বিশাল দালান। এক কথায় কোথাও নদ-নদী তার আপন গতিতে চলতে পারছে না।
