(AP) — CAPE CANAVERAL, Fla. Scientists have grown plants in lunar dirt taken by NASA's Apollo astronauts for the first time.
Researchers had no idea what would grow in the tough moon dirt and wanted to test if it might be utilized to create food for future lunar travelers. They were astounded by the outcomes.
"Holy cow. Plants can be found growing on the moon. "Are you kidding me?" said Robert Ferl of the Institute of Food and Agricultural Sciences at the University of Florida.
Ferl and his colleagues planted thale cress in lunar dirt brought back by Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin of Apollo 11 and other moonwalkers. The good news is that every seed germinated.
