My Town In Ten Pics - Tunis - 2020-11-20

I am Bilel from Tunisia. I am going to present to you today and for the first time the city where I live, called Tunis, which is the capital of my country. The photos were taken on different dates using both my phone Samsung S7 Edge and my Canon EOS 150D camera.

Tunis, the capital of Tunisia, is located on a hill on the shore of Lake Tunis, a few kilometers from the Mediterranean coast of Africa. It is one of the most laid back towns in North Africa, with its exotic charm. The city center is ancient, dating back to the Ottoman Empire, but it is surrounded by the infrastructure of a modern Arab city, so you will see both sides of it.

1- The Medina

It is the historic heart of the capital, imbued with all the fabulous stories that Tunis has known. This set of narrow streets is the essential place to start your visit of the city. Here you walk slowly and take the time to observe the architecture and its various influences.

The Medina is home to many mosques but also superb houses and palaces. It has also been listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1979.

2- Bardo museum

In the suburb of Bardo, take the time to contemplate in this museum the many imprints left by Tunisia's past, between Roman mosaics, frescoes and sculptures. It is one of the most important museums in the Mediterranean basin for the richness of its collections.

3-The great Zitouna mosque

Real nerve center of the medina of Tunis and it is nicknamed the "mosque of the olive tree". With 184 ancient columns and nine entrances, it is the oldest and largest sanctuary in the capital.

4- Delice Cafe

This cafe, made famous by Patrick Broil's song, is located 25 minutes from Tunis in the city of Sidi Bou Said.

This wonderful village overlooking the Bay of Tunis and its beautiful white and blue houses that blend Arab and Andalusian architecture.

5- Carthage National Museum

Older than the Bardo museum, the Carthage museum will show you the many adventures of the city of the same name. You will be able to admire there very beautiful sarcophagi but also amulets of Egyptian deities or an impressive collection of Punic ceramics.

6- La Goulette

La Goulette is the best known Tunisian city for its tolerance and cultural mix. Catos, Jews and Muslims cohabited together in peace and shared with respect their mutual religious rituals.

7- Saint-Vincent-de-Paul cathedral

It is the catholic rite cathedral of the city of Tunis . Located at Avenue Habib Bourguiba in downtown Tunis, the current cathedral is located on Independence Square, the crossroads between Avenue Habib-Bourguiba and Avenue de France, opposite the French Embassy. It is built in a Romano-Byzantine style.

8- The New City of Tunis

The new city was built at the end of the XIXth century by the French and the Italians, following a rigorous town planning, with the streets perpendicular to each other, resolutely contrasting with the labyrinth of the medina. It stretches between the south of the latter and the sea, on once swampy land.

This is where you find all the official buildings of Tunisia, as well as the embassies or consulates of most of the countries represented in Tunis.

But its interest lies above all in the architecture of the buildings. Art Nouveau buildings with exuberant floral motifs or Art Deco, with more geometric decorations are legion.

9- St George's Anglican Church

The Anglican Church of Tunis is located on Mongi Slim Street, not far from the old Bab Carthagena Gate.

In time, the street which ran alongside it bore the name of rue des Protestants and opened onto the Passage and Hafsia districts.

Built in 1901, this church, which bears the name of Saint George, was built on the site of an old Anglican cemetery, the land of which was donated in the seventeenth century by Bey Hamouda Pasha to the British nation.

10-Panoramic view from Sidi Bou Saïd

The view is breathtaking, you have to take your time to sip your drink and see the sunset over the bay of Tunis with in the background the small "mountain" of Boucornine and at your feet the port of Sidi Bou and a little further on Carthage and the Punic ports.
