Achilles and his heels

ACHILLES

In Greek mythology, Achilles was a Greek hero in the Trojan War and the main character as well as the greatest fighter in Iliad Homer. Akhilles is also touted as the most handsome knight in the Trojan war. According to a legend, begun by the poetry of Statius in the first century, Akhilles's body was invulnerable except in the heel. Akhilles died because his heel was injured, so then came the term "Achilles heel", which meant a person's weakness.

Achilles is the son of the nymphs of Thetis and Peleus. Zeus and Poseidon compete for Thetis, which is then reminded by Prometheus that the child conceived of Thetis will be superior to his father. Therefore Zeus and Poseidon halted his pursuit and allowed Thetis to marry Peleus who then entrusted Achilles to a Centaur named Khiron on Mount Pelion to train Achilles.

According to the Achilleid poem written by Statius, when Achilles was born then Thetis sought to make Akhilles eternal by dipping the Achilles baby into the Styx river. This causes the Achilles heel to become weak because of the heel that Thetis holds the baby Achilles. Another version of this story is Thetis applying Ambrosia flowers during the day, then burning the baby Akhilles at night for his human body to disappear, but Thetis effort is stopped by Peleus, so that the left heel of Achilles is still a normal human heel. Thetis then left her husband and son with anger.

Initially, Achilles was told to be reluctant to get involved in the Trojan War. This reluctance is reasonable since he has been foreseen to be killed in the war. Given this, Achilles is trying to avoid and not get involved. However, Achilles soon forgets the prophecy after seeing the Trojan people kill his friend named Patroclus.

This death made Achilles go down in battle with unparalleled strength and ferocity. Achilles succeeded in killing Hector, but was later assassinated by Paris, thus fulfilling the prophecy of his fate. If only his anger not been provoked by the death of Patroclus, he probably would not have come down to the battlefield that ultimately killed him. Although initially refused to fight, ultimately Achilles was killed also in accordance with predetermined destiny.
