At the start of the week we were in Auckland visiting my Dad. We went to one of the landmarks of Auckland, Maungakiekie or more commonly known as One Tree Hill, and discovered that there is a small piece of the countryside embedded in the heart of New Zealand’s largest city. It all started with a strategic call that we should park at the bottom of the hill, since there would be limited parking at the top, even for weekdays due to One Tree Hill being the most well-known landmark of Auckland, and also due to school holidays. So we decided instead to park at the bottom of the hill and walk up. Similar to the many hills dotted around Auckland, One Tree Hill was formed from a volcanic eruption many thousands of years ago. It remains of historical importance, as it was one of most important Maori Forts in Auckland region up until the late 18th Century.

这个礼拜初我们回奥克兰看望我父亲, 随便去了奥克兰最著名的景点之一，芒格基基 ，通常人们都叫它独树山或者一树山。很多人说新西兰是地球的最后一块净土。而独树山位于奥克兰的中心地带， 是新西兰这个最大城市中心的一块净土。和分布在奥克兰市中很多其它的山一样，独树山也是几万年前形成的死火山。它还有具有深刻的历史意义，直到18世纪末这里都是毛利人的要塞。独树山的山顶有个很小的停车场。因为知道这里是奥克兰最出名的地标之一，加上正好是暑假期间，我们很明智地把车停在了山下的停车场，而不是把车开上山顶的停车场碰运气。

On our way up, even though we were essentially following the road, there were sceneries here and there that made us forget we are in the middle of the city. There were little paths through tall trees that made us feel like we were walking through a forest. There were views of rolling hills covered with the greenest grass that made us feel like we were walking in the countryside. There were even sheep and cows, farm animals that we didn't expect to see in the city, grazing on the side of the road.

我们沿山而上，沿途到处看到高耸的树木，成片的草地，好像行走在森林公园。继续往上，居然还有一群群悠闲的绵羊和牛在成片的绿茵茵的草地上吃草休息，简直就像在郊外的农场。实在不敢相信我们正身处于城市的中心。

After a few twists and turns up the hill, we final saw the top. We took a short break at the side of the road and moved on. Not far to go now. Looking behind, we could see people walking towards the top of the hill in all directions. It seems there are other off the track paths that could also lead to the top of the hill. Something that we might try next time.

绕过几个弯之后，我们终于看到了山顶。稍稍休息了一会，我们继续前行。胜利就在眼前。回头一看，身后有许多人也正从不同方向朝着山顶前行。除了我们走的大道，还有许多小路也通往山顶，或许下次我们可以尝试走别的小路。

After some final steps, we reached the top of the hill. The decision to park at the bottom of the hill was wise. The hill top carpark was full as expected, and there are lots of cars circling around trying to find a park. The top of the hill has an obelisk that was erected as a memorial to the Maori people in the region. There used to be a lone tree standing here (hence the name One Tree Hill), but it was chopped down by Maori activists as a protest to Maori injustice. From the top of the hill we also get a beautiful view of the Waitemata Harbour and the Rangitoto Island, as well as the Auckland City itself.

不多久，我们终于到了山顶。山顶的停车场果然全满，还有好多车转来转去地找停车位。我不由地在心里暗暗得意了下自己的先见之明。当然山顶上醒目的毛利人纪念碑还是瞬间夺去了我的注意力。曾经这里有一颗高耸的大树和纪念碑并立于山顶，这也是一树山的由来，可是之后被愤怒的毛利人抗议者偷偷砍掉来抗议对毛利人的不公平。在山顶，我们可以俯瞰奥克兰全景，还有朗伊托托岛和美丽的海景。

Overall, the walk wasn't too long, about 30 minutes up and 20 minutes down, and it was a present walk. Although it was slightly steep towards the end, the view up the top was definitely worth it. There's really no better way to spend a morning than to have a bit of exercise while enjoying this amazing view at the same time!

总体来说，这次登山之行还算轻松，大约用了半小时上山和二十分钟下山。尽管快到山顶的路有一点点陡，可是山顶的风景绝对值回票价。欣赏到了这么无敌的风景又做了运动，真是个充实又愉快的早晨！
