I'm going to give new users some tips for using My Ether Wallet, if anybody has anything to add please leave a comment below.
First of all, the correct link is https://www.myetherwallet.com/ and there should be green writing to the left of the address stating MYETHERWALLET LLC. You're going to want to bookmark this site and only go there from your bookmark. When you create a new wallet you're going to get a keystore file for download and a private key. Here are some tips for your private key:
-Save your private key immediately. You will not get another chance to and if you don't have the key your funds will be lost forever.
-Write your key down on paper, triple check to see it is correct and put the paper in a safe place.
-If you copy paste your keys save them to a usb and NOT ON YOUR COMPUTER.
-Save your keystore file to a usb and NOT ON YOUR COMPUTER.
-Make multiple wallets, one for regular transactions and some for long term savings.
-NEVER LEAVE PRIVATE KEYS OR KEYSTORE FILES ON YOUR COMPUTER< ALWAYS SAVE THEM TO AN EXTERNAL DEVICE FOR OFFLINE STORAGE.
Some tips for keeping your wallet secure and avoiding common scams are:
-NEVER GIVE OUT YOUR PRIVATE KEY.
-If you receive any email about converting erc20 tokens to erc23 or some such upgrades it is a phishing attempt.
-Never log in to your wallet from another website (I've seen some give the option to).
-All an airdrop needs is your public key (your address) they DON'T NEED YOUR PRIVATE KEY to send you tokens.
Some miscellaneous tips:
-You can check your balance by putting your address (public key) in at https://etherscan.io so you don't need to log in to your wallet to see your funds.
-Expose your private keys as little as possible.
-There is a new pop up on My Ether Wallet, I suggest newbies read it through, after that you can skip it by clicking on the page behind it.
I hope this was helpful to you.
