My California ~ The Hollywood Christmas Parade
The Hollywood Christmas Parade is an annual parade that takes place in Hollywood around Thanksgiving. My wife and I have been going to this parade since we were kids. Back then, it was known as the Santa Claus Lane Parade. It featured marching bands, floats, animals, and celebrities, mostly from television, and took place on the Wednesday evening before Thanksgiving. We both think that back then the studios had more power in compelling the stars to ride in the parade. Over the years though, the number of celebrities grew less and less.
At some point, the parade moved to its current time on the Sunday evening after Thanksgiving, and was rebranded the Hollywood Christmas Parade. Balloons have been added to the parade too. Security has grown tighter every year as well, and there is more and more of the parade route taken up by bleacher seats that you have to pay for. One year, my wife ran right out to the car that Mickey Rooney was riding in and gave him a hug. You can't do anything like that any more.
We still go every year and try to find a spot near the red carpet area that isn't completely obstructed by cameras or reporters. We did okay this year, but still had to contend with a camera crane and a libra head camera, as well as a woman who, despite her cast, kept getting up and dancing, and obstructing our view.
We'll be back next year though. In the meantime, enjoy these shots of this year's (the 87th annual) parade.
