Ah-yee Tsoe's Boiled Beans

Our Myanmar people are very fond of boiled beans. Most of us grew up on a breakfast of boiled beans, steaming rice washed down with plain tea. Steaming rice is usually oiled lightly with sesame oil and sprinkled with salt. Boiled beans are also oiled librally. Some may also use sliced onion, chopped tomato, pounded pepper as an addition, but most of us are quite satisfied with rice and boiled beans.
ကြၽန္ေတာ္တို႔ျမန္မာေတြက ပဲပုတ္ႀကိဳက္ၾကပါတယ္။ ကြၽန္ေတာ္တို႔အမ်ားစုဟာ ထမင္းပူပူေႏြးေႏြး ပဲပုတ္ကေလးနဲ႔စားၿပီး ေရေႏြးၾကမ္းနဲ႔ ႀကီးျပင္းလာၾကသူေတြျဖစ္ပါတယ္။ ထမင္းပူပူေႏြးေႏြးကို ႏွမ္းဆီေလးဆမ္း၊ ဆားေလးျဖဴး၊ ပဲပုတ္ကလည္း ဆီေလးရႊဲရႊဲဆမ္းပါေသးတယ္။ တခ်ိဳ႕ကေတာ့ ၾကက္သြန္နီေလးပါးပါးအကြင္းလိုက္လွီး၊ ခရမ္းခ်ဥ္သီးေလးျခမ္း၊ ျငဳတ္သီးေထာင္းေလးပါေသးတယ္။ ဒါေပမဲ့ ကြၽန္ေတာ္တို႔ အမ်ားစုကေတာ့ ထမင္းနဲ႔ပဲျပဳတ္ဆို ေက်နပ္ၾကပါၿပီ။
Many kinds of beans can be boiled and eaten. But only a few are boiled and sold by haekers - butter beans, red beans, and green peas also known as garden peas. Among them, the last is the most popular, so popular that whenever any Bama hears the word 'boiled beans' (pe-byoke) he or she can only think of boiled green peas, and no other.
ျပဳတ္တာကေတာ့ ဘယ္ပဲျဖစ္ျဖစ္ ျပဳတ္လို႔ရပါတယ္။ ပဲျပဳတ္အျဖစ္ ဆီဆမ္းၿပီးစားၾကပါတယ္။ ဒါေပမဲ့ ပဲျပဳတ္အျဖစ္ျပဳတ္ၿပီး ေရာင္းတာ စားၾကတာကေတာ့ အမ်ားဆံုးစားေတာ္ပဲပါပဲ။

In cities, towns, villages, large and small, wherever you are, you are sure to find a boiled bean hawker. Until 1980, on transfers, I found some of them. But they are just a drop in the ocean. The overwhelming number of boiled bean hawkers are still women.
ဗမာတို႔ေဒသ ၿမိဳ႕ႀကီးၿမိဳ႕ငယ္၊ ရြာႀကီးရြာငယ္ ရြာလတ္ ဘယ္မွာပဲျဖစ္ျဖစ္၊ ပဲျပဳတ္သည္ရဲ႕ အသံကို ၾကားႏိုင္ပါတယ္။ (၁၉၈၀)ျပည့္ႏွစ္ေလာက္အထိ ေယာက်္ားပဲျပဳတ္သည္ကို မေတြ႔ဘူးပါဘူး။ ဒါေပမဲ့ ျမန္မာျပည္တစ္နံတစ္လ်ား သြားလာလႈပ္႐ွားရင္း ေနာက္ပိုင္းမွာ ေယာက်္ားပဲျပဳတ္ေရာင္းတာ ေတြ႔ဖူးလာပါတယ္။ ဒါေပမဲ့ ႐ွားပါတယ္။ အမ်ားစုကေတာ့ အခုလည္း အမ်ိဳးသမီးေတြပါပဲ။
