My 2017: Welcoming the New Year - The End for a New Beginning

New Year is one of the most awaited celebrations of the year. People in all places prepare for their own way of welcoming and they even spend a lot for this celebration is also a chance to bond with the whole family, to make more memories to cherish not only for that year but also for th rest of their lives!

There is a diverse way in celebrating New Year in every places. I would like to share ours in the Philippines.

In our place, usually a day before 31, we buy a lot of round fruits like apple, orange, watermelon, grapes and etc. It must be 12 varieties of round fruits for it is said that it can bring luck to the family for the whole year.

We also prepare for a media noche with the whole family. In our dinner we don't just eat but we also talk, laugh and share to everyone in the table a lot of things. We bond like there is no tomorrow that is why it feels like we miss half of our lives if we we're not able to celebrate holidays with our family.

We stay all up until the clock strikes midnight and then here's a funny tradition. Those who wants to grow on height, we have to jump as high as we can for us to gain height within the year and we pinch our nose to make it pointed. Well, I don't know if this is true but I did it because I was desperate to gain more height since I am just 5'2 lol. After that we went outside our home and lightened the fireworks that we bought.

It is said that it can drive away bad spirits and badluck inside your house.

After the small fireworks display we went back inside the house and had a glass of wine and talk again with the whole family about random things. Several minutes we will go to bed.

January 1, 2018 it is a tradition that we should all stay inside the house with the family as a superstition so that we will be together the whole family the entire year so no one shall go out.

All these traditions and superstitions are oassed through generations so we, to show respect to our ancestors, we continue to practice them and impart them to our lives.
