CELEBRATION OF CHRISTMAS SEASON.

in #my-niche7 years ago

Although December 25th has been a controversial date related to pagan sol Invictus holiday, the day of the celebration of a "sun god" one thing is certain to every Christians all over the world, 25th of December, is the day our Lord Jesus Christ, was conceived into this world to save mankind .

For unto us a child is born, unto us a son is given: and the government shall be upon his shoulder: and his name shall be called Wonderful, Counsellor, The mighty God, The everlasting Father, The Prince of Peace." ( Isaiah 9:6)

Christians around the world gather to celebrate the birth of Jesus Christ. The Christ whose birth has given the world a roadmap to abundant life, peace and prosperity.

That special day is termed Christmas day. A season for the proclamation of good news. It is a celebration of joy and of hope.  It is that season of the year were people stretch out the hand of fellowship, thanksgiving and solidarity in charitable works in prisons, hospitals orphanage, aged homes etc.

One of the most remarkable thing about the season of Christmas besides the festivals, is the season of love.

God's Christmas gift to all of us.

for God so love the world, that he gave his only begotten son and whomsoever believeth in him, shall not perish but have everlasting life" (John 3:16).

Giving one another gifts has been a part of the Christmas celebration for many years. It symbolizes the love we have for each other, and it is a reminder that God loved us so much that He gave a wonderful gift for each one of us.

CHRISTMAS IN NIGERIA

If there is one thing that unites Nigeria people together apart from football is the love in Christmas season. Celebrating Christmas with extended family, relations in villages is a Nigerian thing and also in Africa. It involves a lot of preparation and flexing.

In Nigeria, people travel back from cities to villages to celebrate Christmas with grandparents and relatives to enjoy the season together. Streets are decorated with lighted Christmas trees, Christmas lights and ribbons. In the spirit of celebrations, knockouts or fire crackers are use to celebrate.

According to jumia travel, there are certain customs and traditions now related with Nigerians when it comes to Christmas season. They include:

  • Christmas rice: On Christmas day, when you see a friend, after the normal exchange of pleasantries and wishes, the next statement that comes up is "i am coming to your house for my christmas rice". It's now a norm in Nigeria, that rice must be available for the family and guest to entertain them on Christmas day. That is also a major reason why many big companies in Nigeria, use bag of rice as gift to their workers on Christmas season.

    • Sporadic shooting of knock-outs: Firecrackers popularly called knockouts or banger in Nigeria is one thing that never escapes the Christmas season. Infact, almost every Nigerian from adult down to children, pop fireworks 🎆 on Christmas day. Little children take advantage of this customs and play pranks on people. Throwing them knockout, when they least expected it, the fear that comes with the knock out is what makes the custom more fun.

    • Christmas clothes: While I was growing up, I use to think Christmas clothes and shoes were only meant for children. I'd know idea adult also buy for themselves. No matter the tribe, social status or religion, Nigerians are known to go all out for shopping to prepare for the Christmas. They pick the most unique and beautiful clothes to wear on Christmas day. Some family go to the extent of making elaborate style or custom design to outdo different families when they travel to the village. But this things are what makes the season more fun and exciting.

Inspite of all the losses people must have made in ponzi schemes, bad investment, bad governance, insecurity, depression and recession, the celebratory spirits of Christmas in the heart of Nigerians can't be broken.
