Well essentially God can do anything, so I think a more valid question should be "what are believers *not* doing to earn His hedge of protection?". But besides that Jesus did say to His disciples that they would be persecuted and also killed for His namesake, and as far as I can tell we are living in the final age before His return, so... There's that.
