RE: Musing Posts

I actually like the idea of taking a multi-day cruise, 7 to 10 at least, and my wife and I have looked into it a time or two, but as of yet, no cruise.

I think the reasons for that is:

  1. Overall expense. We live in the Pacific Northwest. Aside for maybe a trip around Alaska, there aren't any cruise originating near to where we live, and especially to where we would want to go. Which means, in addition to the cost of the cruise, we'd also be looking at the cost of roundtrip airfare.

  2. Cruise ships are too often in the news, and not for good things. Be it sinking, engine or power trouble, or diseases of some kind that break out at sea, it's not been a good five to ten years for the cruise industry. And yet, by and large, prices seem to remain high.

However, if we were able to get around those two issues, here's what I would like about it:

  1. Cruise ships have a lot of different things to do on them. It wouldn't be hard to find an activity. Or you could just stay in your cabin. A people person could find plenty of people to interact with, while an introvert could find a quiet spot to read.

  2. See different places. A cruise ship isn't just about the sea, but ferries take you inland to whatever destinations are available on the cruise. That would allow for sampling different places, getting a vibe for what a place is like, while having other places to compare and contrast it to. That way, you could decide if you wanted to go back or not, and not necessarily spend the money or the time that you might otherwise.

  3. All-inclusive. While there are plenty of resorts that are all-inclusive, there are plenty that aren't. Cruises are nearly always all-inclusive, so food, beverages, and onboard activities are generally a part of the price, which is probably why they cost so much. Still, it's a convenience that's hard to ignore.
