weku.io will not be the same as steemit.com. They may come from the same origin, but they have a different set of developers, a different user base  (while overlapping). I'm not familiar where they branched off though, but expect it to be more different as time goes on. If you are asking if it can be a "real" currency, I mean, yes. Yes it can. We'll see what ideas they have in store for the blockchain though, because as far as I can tell it's not changing much at all. Would also be good to know if they even have a different set of witnesses, or if they're all run by the same group. Interesting times, indeed.
