Digital Sound Design - Xfer Serum - Part 2 (Oscillators)
Welcome to Part 2 of Digital Sound Design - Xfer Serum Series
In this part we will be covering all the parameters so that you will gain a solid understanding of how to navigate around the oscillator section in Serum. (Complimentary Video Guide coming soon!)
Table of Contents
- Introduction
- Oscillators
- Noise & Sub (Coming Soon)
Oscillator Module
Serum features two wavetable oscillators which are typically the primary sound synthesis source.
By Default you start out with a Saw wave on Oscillator A.
Osc Enable - Each Oscillator window has a button on top left corner which allows you to enable or mute the oscillator.
Wavetable Menu - Allows you to select different Wavetables, you can also scroll through them using the arrows buttons.
Pitch Controls - Allows you to change the pitch of the sound.
- Octaves
- Semi-tone
- Fine Value (measured in cents) [100 cents = 1 semitone]
- Coarse Pitch
Window - Toggle between 2D and 3D View
- Wave Table Editor
Unison - Allows you to stack multiple notes of the same sound.
Detune - Spreads the voicing apart to make the sound more interesting. (Only applicable when Unison is enabled)
Blend - Blends the voices together. (Only applicable when Unison is enabled)
Phase - Allows you to select the point of where the oscillator will begin when a note is triggered.
Random - Allows you to randomize the point of where the phasing of the oscillator will begin. (Higher randomization = More balanced sound between the voicing)
Wavetable Position - Allows you to cycle through (256) different series of wavetables within the oscillator. (Toggle between 2D and 3D view to see visually what is going on in real time)
Warp Menu - This menu allows you to select your warp mode, which allows you to bend, shape and manipulate the sound based on your selection.
- Self Sync
- Windowed Sync
- Bend +
- Bend -
- Bend +/- (Combines the characteristics of the previous two bends)
- PWM
- Asym +
- Asym -
- Asym +/-
- Flip
- Mirror
- Remap 1,2,3,4
- Quantize
- FM (from other OSC) Frequency Modulation
- AM (from other OSC) Amplitude Modulation
- RM (from other OSC) Ring Modulation
- FM Noise Osc
- FM Sub Osc
Pan - Allows you to place the sound anywhere in the Stereo Field (Left to Right)
Level - Let's you increase or decrease the sound level.
That should do it for the Oscillator module. I highly encourage you to spend some time now playing around on Serum, it's the only way for you to retain all these information and get better at sound design.
PRACTICE PRACTICE and PRACTICE!
In Part 3 we will be covering Noise & Sub generators. Stay tuned!
