Over the clouds - The making of a song (Part 1) - by Priscilla Hernandez
Hi again, Priscilla Hernandez (singer-songwriter/illustrator) here.
I am often asked how my songs are born and I thought about doing a little series of posts and videos explaining a little bit of my creative process. We singer-songwriters have all different methods to compose but I'm sharing mine, from this first draft (spontaneous improvisation with an Irish tin whistle and voice) to a final song produced at the studio.
So starting sharing this "song in the making vlog" with its birth, a casual unrehearsed improvisation outdoors ;) As I already mentioned in my Steemit introduction post, I love Nature which is a constant source of inspiration. Sometimes I bring instruments with me (those small enough to carry like flutes, drums or my wind band (check my DTube channel for a windband video). I always bring with me a portable recorder (zoom H2N) to sample sounds from birds, wind or gurgling creeks, or to register these "song buds". When I first play I just let it flow lyric-less (random phonetic sounds) when the sight is inspiring... Though the first draft has no words, it usually has some meaning in my head. As I was literally "Over the Clouds" that day, that is the title of this tune, and part of that "soul imprint" will remain in the final words.
There are some other themes that are born in other circumstances, after having dreams (or nightmares) or inspired on some of my drawings or writings... but I would say many were born indeed in the Wilderness. If you want to see an example of a fully produced song/video you can also check my Steemit introduction :), there is one already there as example.
Some of this improvisations sometimes become songs in their own right, some other times they remain raw and true to the moment. I always say "if it knocks twice, then it´s a keeper" :) and that is time to turn them into proper songs.
I want to say that after I shared the improvisation on my network ( I am @yidneth almost in everyone), people downloaded and shared it without my credit in so many places... A bittersweet event indeed, as I got lots of lovely feedback but most people didn't know It was me the person performing. Still it gave me the idea to "rescue" it also as an exercise to share some "vlogs" of how it becomes something more final.
Well, I hope you encourage me to go on with them. So now it´s the time to record a basic structure at the piano and layer some instruments and backing vocals as a foundation to build on.
If you like it please resteem it :) And if you want to make any questions so I can reply in the forthcoming videos, just leave a comment here.

This was beautiful! And you are doing amazing in front of the camera! :)
Thank you, I can sing and talk to an audience but I feel shy speaking to a camera if alone, haha. I am moving to next step which is recording a piano structure to layer instruments on top.
Yeah, I know the feel, I have the same issue with speaking and I have made only a handful of videos reading my stories on tape, kind of weird to talk to yourself :D
@yidneth you look and sound great in front of the cameras, and your music just enthralls me! It reminds me of when I first heard Enya, but your music grips me even more. So delighted you have blessed us with your presence here on steemit. Looking forward to hearing so much more from you. Thank you.
Since I joined you have been so sweet and encouraging, it does mean a lot. You will likely find a "darker" more "spectral" side to my work soon, I guess. And oh my, I can sing in front of an audience, but pressing record and just speak to the camera was a little bit intimidating, I guess I'll get better at that :). More on part 2
