ALBUM REVIEW: "Jesus Is King" - Kanye West
There are those who like it and some who don't give a damn about his work (for obvious reasons, or not)... But the fact is that one of the most anticipated albums of the year can finally be heard by the general public around the world and Kanye West definitely doesn't disappoint, proving it was worth waiting and ignoring the delay of his latest work: Jesus Is King.
Despite being a controversial figure who usually speaks more than necessary (usually causing free controversy with these attitudes), there is no denying that he is one of the most competent, influential and important rappers in the music market. This makes him an iconic persona in such a competitive and somewhat unfair environment (but this is neither the place nor the time for this kind of debate).
With a particular way of exposing his music, he always looks for some way to reinvent himself and this gives him a singularity that is difficult for other artists to copy (although many are influenced by his work). Through him, a music genre (Rap) that is still widely rejected (either by expert critics or by a portion of the public) strives to stay on a high level and secure a space in the crowd.
Jesus Is King has come to crystallize a facet that he had been for some time demonstrating to his audience (a more direct connection to his more religious side) and a more introspective, intimate vibe filled with the surrender + surrender combo - which, by the way, is based on a lot of self-criticism - West delivers one of his best and most significant albums, watered to great production quality (in the broad sense of its conception).
Betting everything on universal themes like Faith, Spiritual Battles and Positivity, the songs that embrace the entire album in their restricted 27 minutes are extremely straightforward in their messages. There is not a single letter that is irrelevant or poorly articulated with their respective musical arrangements... Quite the opposite, all the sound architecture of this is very well thought out in all its most significant details.
Choosing to present this new album as something that can be considered a way to open his faith, West sheds any apparent cynicism that might be considered typical of an even contemporary, he makes a point of printing the fingerprint of an artist who, apparently, You are seeking - above all - a path of self-awareness that will lift your spirit.
The album's narrative has a consistent relevance and all the compositions (full of guest appearances... further enhancing the end result) are supported by a conscious rhythm of their own identity that flirts mainly with soft beats and considerably simpler chords (an assertive choice for this kind of gospel music approach chosen by the rapper).
Perhaps of all the qualities of this work, the most notable is the way in which all songs are contextualized and connected. The impression that is marked in the mind and ears is that it is accompanying a piece or musical film that follows a line where the facts are exponentially distributed considering their particular relevance.
