Something in music: origin

One evening at a hot, trendy L.A. nightclub on a rare solo outing, yours truly found himself standing alone at the bar preparing to review the upcoming act. Before he had taken more than a few notes, however, he was bookended by a pair of vivacious vixens who insisted on engaging your rockin’ writer in cozy conversation. Strangely, the subject of “marriage” arose.

One of the young ladies noted that when a gal is about to get hitched she needs “something old, something new, something borrowed and something blue.” Your provocative penman was immediately inspired. After all, those very same terms could be applied to music too: “Something old” or classic, “something new” or recently released, “something borrowed” (a cover), and “something blue” (a blues song or a song with “blue” in the title.) The rest is history.

Something Old

Our “something old this edition is the classic cut "Tom Sawyer" by the Canadian band Rush. It debuted on the group’s 1981 platter titled Moving Pictures. Lead lead singer, bass and keyboard player, Geddy Lee, said the FM-radio staple is a "defining piece of music ... from the early '80s".

Something New

Our “something new” this edition is the new single, "A Year Gone To The Dogs.” The song was written and recorded by Austin, Texas-based singer-songwriter and guitarist Terry Klein. According to a recent e-mail, the song “is a reaction to the year we have all just endured.”

Klein told the press: ‘One morning not long ago these words started coming at me, As the tune took shape, though, I didn’t want it to be stuck in this particular time. Some years are just bad years, years gone to the dogs. The joke, I guess, is that this year in particular has been pretty fantastic for the dogs. I mean we’re always, always around to hang out with them."

Something Borrowed

This time around the “something borrowed” is the tune "Bright Lights Big City'' byJimmy Reed who wrote and released the blues song in 1961. This stripped-down, honest ersion is by American recording artist Fred Hostetler. His expert rendition appear on his recently released album of acoustic living room blues titled Fred’s Blue Chair Blues.

Something Blue

Finally, our “something blue” this time is the song “Life is Hard (When You Play The Blues)” recorded by the Twelve Bar Blues Band live at the Cafe bar de Comm in the Netherlands for Bluesmoose Radio in 2014. The group included: JJ. Sharp (vocals and harp), Kees Dusink (guitar), Randy Pears (rhythm guitar), Jeffrey van Duffelen (drums), and Patrick "Sideburn" Obrist )ass).
