Something in music: origin

One evening at a hot, trendy L.A. nightclub on a rare solo outing, yours truly found himself standing alone at the bar preparing to review the upcoming act. Before he had taken more than a few notes, however, he was bookended by a pair of vivacious vixens who insisted on engaging your rockin’ writer in cozy conversation. Strangely, the subject of “marriage” arose.

One of the young ladies noted that when a gal is about to get hitched she needs “something old, something new, something borrowed and something blue.” Your provocative penman was immediately inspired. After all, those very same terms could be applied to music too: “Something old” or classic, “something new” or recently released, “something borrowed” (a cover), and “something blue” (a blues song or a song with “blue” in the title.) The rest is history.

Something Old

Our “something old this edition is the classic cut "Black Water" which was recorded by the American band The Doobie Brothers. It was first included on their 1974 platter titled What Were Once Vices Are Now Habits and was written by founding member Patrick Simmons. The song climbed the charts to number one in mid-March 1975.

Something New

The “something new” for this edition is the noteworthy number “If I Pray” by the impressive, award-winning, contemporary blues songstress Casey Hensley. The nigh stunning song is off her long-awaited, 043miere platter titled Good As Gone. You rockin’ writer hopes to be reviewing the disc in the near future.)

Something Borrowed

This time around our “something borrowed” is the song
"Me and Bobby McGee" written by American singer-songwriter Kris Kristofferson, first performed by Roger Miller, and made famous by singer Janis Joplin in 1971. This live version is by California-based vocalist Deedra Patrick. In a brief online interview Patrick discusses this lively 2018 performance.

She said that the video also “features Tim Stonelake on guitar [and] Mark Infante on harmonica. She chose the song “because it was an impromptu performance. The three of us had never played it together before.” Patrick concludes” “We are performing at The Old Fashioned Social Drinkery in Bakersfield, [Califfornia]. It was a fun night of jamming.”

Something Blue

Finally, our “something blue” this time is the song "Walking Blues." This more recent cover was recorded by Playing For Change. It features Keb' Mo', Roberto Luti and Nico Bereciartua. The video was meant to honor famous blues legend Robert Johnson who recorded a cover of the Son House composition in 1936.
