Something in music: origin

One evening at a hot, trendy L.A. nightclub on a rare solo outing, yours truly found himself standing alone at the bar preparing to review the upcoming act. Before he had taken more than a few notes, however, he was bookended by a pair of vivacious vixens who insisted on engaging your rockin’ writer in cozy conversation. Strangely, the subject of “marriage” arose.

One of the young ladies noted that when a gal is about to get hitched she needs “something old, something new, something borrowed and something blue.” Your provocative penman was immediately inspired. After all, those very same terms could be applied to music too: “Something old” or classic, “something new” or recently released, “something borrowed” (a cover), and “something blue” (a blues song or a song with “blue” in the title.) The rest is history.

Something Old

]
Today’s “something old” is the famous, classic cut called "(Don't Fear) The Reaper" recorded by the American rock group Blue Oyster Cult. It was written by the band lead guitarist Donald "Buck Dharma" Roeser. The tune first appeared on the group’s amous 1976 platter Agents of Fortune.

Something New

Our “something new” this edition is the new single titled “Seesayer.” It’s by Amon Tobin’s popular music project known as Two Fingers. In a recent email Tobin said: “Two Fingers is my release valve for beats that come out like Tourette's whether I like it or not. ‘Seesayer’ makes me impatient to play out again the way the Fight! Fight! Fight! album did." It is the first official Nomark Records release of the year.

Something Borrowed

Our “something borrowed” this time around is the “The More I See You.” It’s a 1945 song by Harry Warren and Mack Gordon. This exceptional, upbeat cover is by American singer-songwriter, multi-instrumentalist, arranger John Tabacco, producer, engineer, and graphic artist [John Tabacco](John Tabacco). As always, Tobacco gives the song his all and adds his own personal touch to the piece. It is featured on his new release titled Script 2020. Check it out today!

Something Blue

Last, but certainly not least, our “something blue” is the beautiful song “Blues Alone,” it was written and recorded by New York City-based, award winning singer-songwriter and producer Lili Roquelin. The song is included on her 2008 EP Lili Roquelin (Deluxe Edition).
Her signature sound is a blend of folk, pop, and rock music. The EP is currently available on all streaming platforms. Autographed CDs and digital music postcards are available on her official website.
