Something in music: origin

One evening at a hot, trendy L.A. nightclub on a rare solo outing, yours truly found himself standing alone at the bar preparing to review the upcoming act. Before he had taken more than a few notes, however, he was bookended by a pair of vivacious vixens who insisted on engaging your rockin’ writer in cozy conversation. Strangely, the subject of “marriage” arose.

One of the young ladies noted that when a gal is about to get hitched she needs “something old, something new, something borrowed and something blue.” Your provocative penman was immediately inspired. After all, those very same terms could be applied to music too: “Something old” or classic, “something new” or recently released, “something borrowed” (a cover), and “something blue” (a blues song or a song with “blue” in the title.) The rest is history.

Something Old

Today’s “something old” is the classic cut called , "All Right Now." It was recorded by the Brit rock band Free. The tune first appeared on their platter Fire and Water which dropped in 1970. Released as a single, it peaked at number four on the US Billboard Hot 100 singles chart.

Something New

Our “something new” this edition is the new music video by American singer-songwriter and musician Andrew McConathy titled “Tell Me.” It is a part of the new “Songs From a Drunken Hearth” music video series. The song was written by McConathy.

He said the song “is about showing resilience in the face of defeat or adversity and hitting the gas, not slowing down, when it feels like the world is on your shoulders. I wrote the bulk of the song and then finished it with The Drunken Hearts holed up in a cabin outside of Winter Park, Colorado...”

Something Borrowed

Next, our “something borrowed” is "My Sharona" recorded by the American band The Knack. Written by members Berton Averre and Doug Fieger, it first appeared on their 1979 album Get the Knack. This hot cover cut is by the sultry singer-songwriter and guitarist Ali Handal. This sexy, rockin’ re-do is included on the Los Angeles, California-based Handal's third album, "Make Your Move" which dropped in 2010. It was produced by two-time Grammy Award winner Seth Horan.

Something Blue

Last, but not least, our “something blue” is the new world les number “Bayou Mile (acoustic version)” by Califfornia-based singer-songwriter and guitarist Alastair Greene. Greene co-wrote the cut with producer Tab Benoit. The electric-guitar version of the song appears on his 2020 The New World lues album on Whiskey Bayou Records. This acoustic version of this song was recorded at Coyote Road Studios in Santa Barbara, California. It features Greene on vocals and acoustic guitar.

On social media Greene said that “it's become my favorite song on the record.” He concludes: “Having made my reputation as an electric guitar player, performing and recording solo acoustic is something I wanted to do to really challenge myself. I have massive respect for all of the original blues musicians who pioneered so much great music playing by themselves as well as all the singer / songwriters who make this their primary way of performing.”
