Something in music: origin

One evening at a hot, trendy L.A. nightclub on a rare solo outing, yours truly found himself standing alone at the bar preparing to review the upcoming act. Before he had taken more than a few notes, however, he was bookended by a pair of vivacious vixens who insisted on engaging your rockin’ writer in cozy conversation. Strangely, the subject of “marriage” arose.

One of the young ladies noted that when a gal is about to get hitched, she needs “something old, something new, something borrowed, and something blue.” Your provocative penman was immediately inspired. After all, those very same terms could be applied to music too: “Something old” or classic, “something new” or recently released, “something borrowed”, a cover, and “something blue”, a blues song or a song with “blue” in the title. The rest is history.

‘Something’ in Music 365

Something Old

Our “something old” this edition is the classic cut “We Didn't Start the Fire” written and originally recorded by American singer-songwriter and musician Billy Joel. It first appeared on his 1989 album titled Storm Front. It references 119 significant historical events that happened between the years 1949 and 1989.

Something New

Our “something new” this time is the new song and music video titled “The Only One” by an urban indie act known only as The Lyrical One. His burgeoning signature sound is often referred to as “Denver rap.” The video itself was created with the aid of Wondershare Filmora.

Something Borrowed

Our “something borrowed” for this edition is the song “Have You Ever Seen The Rain?” recorded by the American rock group Creedence Clearwater Revival for their 1971 platter Pendulum. It was written by frontman John Fogerty. This 2020 cover cut is by the band Marjinal Benefits featuring singer-songwriter, percussionist and frontwoman Stacy Robin.

If you’d like to see what Robin can do live and are in the Los Angeles area, you’re in luck! She will be performing with her Imaginary Friends at Molly Malones Irish Tavern on Friday, January 19th at 7:00 p.m. Robin briefly discussed the upcoming event on social media.

She exclaimed: “It's actually a full band show for Imaginary Friends! [It’s] Donna Rawlins, Tom McCauley, David James, Michael Yorky, Barrie Berg, and me all in one room! WOOHOO!”

Something Blue

Last but not least, our “something blue” this edition is the song “Blues Ain’t Country.” The single was released in 2019. Written by JW Jackson and Trish Schnig, the cut features Jackson on vocals, and Greg Moody on dobro guitar. In a message on social media, Jackson briefly discussed the track. He described it as “New Country Rock with a Blues feeling mish-mash !”
