Something in music: origin

One evening at a hot, trendy L.A. nightclub on a rare solo outing, yours truly found himself standing alone at the bar preparing to review the upcoming act. Before he had taken more than a few notes, however, he was bookended by a pair of vivacious vixens who insisted on engaging your rockin’ writer in cozy conversation. Strangely, the subject of “marriage” arose.

One of the young ladies noted that when a gal is about to get hitched, she needs “something old, something new, something borrowed, and something blue.” Your provocative penman was immediately inspired. After all, those very same terms could be applied to music too: “Something old” or classic, “something new” or recently released, “something borrowed”, a cover, and “something blue”, a blues song or a song with “blue” in the title. The rest is history.

‘Something’ in Music 261

Something Old

Our “something old” in this edition is the classic cut “Baby Please Don’t Go” by the American rock band Amboy Jukes. It’s a cover of American Delta blues artist Big Joe Williams’ popular song. This audio adaptation originally appeared on the band’s premiere platter Amboy Jukes which hit the record racks in 1967.

Something New

Our “something new” this time is the new number “Feels Too Good To Stop” by American rapper, singer, songwriter, and producer Christel South a.k.a. Empress Kush. Some of her more popular previous pieces include “I Just Wanna F*** Elon Musk”, “The Rona”, and “Coke Dick.” On social media Kush noted it is “a feel-good (feel TOO good??) synth pop song”.

She concluded: “‘Feels Too Good To Stop’ continues my exploration of writing pop tunes with my producer, Darren Vegas. It is the final single to be released from my album Celebrity Crush, which comes out on February 27th and is available exclusively at my website.”

Something Borrowed

Our “something borrowed” this time is the song "Dreams" originally recorded by the Brit-American band Fleetwood Mac and written by Stevie Nicks. It first appeared on the 1977 platter Rumours. This exceptional stripped-down acoustic cover is by the award-winning, New York City-based singer-songwriter, musician, and producer Lili Roquelin.
It features Roquelin singing lead vocals. She is accompanied by musician Curtis Becraft. It was videotaped in 2016. Her most recent release is her original single titled “Childfree.” Learn more about this performer on her official website.

Something Blue

Finally, our “something blue” for this edition is the blues tune “Me and The Devil Blues” written and recorded by American singer, songwriter, and blues musician Robert Johnson. He recorded it in a Dallas, Texas warehouse in 1937. It was his last recording session. The single was released in 1938.
