Something in music: origin

One evening at a hot, trendy L.A. nightclub on a rare solo outing, yours truly found himself standing alone at the bar preparing to review the upcoming act. Before he had taken more than a few notes, however, he was bookended by a pair of vivacious vixens who insisted on engaging your rockin’ writer in cozy conversation. Strangely, the subject of “marriage” arose.

One of the young ladies noted that when a gal is about to get hitched she needs “something old, something new, something borrowed and something blue.” Your provocative penman was immediately inspired. After all, those very same terms could be applied to music too: “Something old” or classic, “something new” or recently released, “something borrowed”, a cover, and “something blue”, a blues song or a song with “blue” in the title. The rest is history.

Something Old

Our “something old'' this edition is the classic cut "Turn the Page" written and recorded by American singer-songwriter and musician Bob Seger. It first appeared on his Back in ‘72 platter which hit record racks in 1973. As a single, it never charted, but the 1976 live version became a regular mainstay on AOR radio.

Something New

Our “something new” this edition is the new single “The Love Again” by artist Amon Tobin’s rock music project known as Only Child Tyrant. In a recent e-missive Tobin briefly commented on the cut. He said the song “is the soundtrack” to “another summer of lover.” He concluded: “It sounds like rock music got drunk in the desert and then tried to stave off dehydration by eating the wrong cactus, and you're going to love it.

Something Borrowed

Our “something borrowed” this time is the song “Killing Me Softly with His Song” co-written by Norman Gimbel and Charles Fox. It was first recorded by American singer Lori Lieberman in 1972 who co-wrote the lyrics. This instrumental audio adaptation is by trumpetist Mike Cottone. It is included on his 2020 disc titled Thank You.

Something Blue

Our “something blue” this time is “Am I Blue.” The song was co-written by Grant Clarke and Harry Akst back in 1929. The song was included in four feature film soundtracks that same year. It has gone on to be included in at least 42 movies and is a standard. This version was recorded by American singer and actress Cher in 1973. It was released as a single and was featured on her 1973 platter Bittersweet White Light.
