Something in music: origin

One evening at a hot, trendy L.A. nightclub on a rare solo outing, yours truly found himself standing alone at the bar preparing to review the upcoming act. Before he had taken more than a few notes, however, he was bookended by a pair of vivacious vixens who insisted on engaging your rockin’ writer in cozy conversation. Strangely, the subject of “marriage” arose.

One of the young ladies noted that when a gal is about to get hitched she needs “something old, something new, something borrowed and something blue.” Your provocative penman was immediately inspired. After all, those very same terms could be applied to music too: “Something old” or classic, “something new” or recently released, “something borrowed” (a cover), and “something blue” (a blues song or a song with “blue” in the title.) The rest is history.

Something Old

Our “something old'' this edition is the classic cut “Barracuda" by the American rock group Heart. The track first appeared on their third studio LP, Little Queen, which dropped in 1977. Released as the platter’s lead single, the song rose to number 11 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart and most recently was included on their 2019 disc Live in Atlantic City.

Something New

Our “something new” this edition is the new video titled “Wait” by the American band Go Analog. This is the official music video for the Columbus, Ohio-based band’s current disc titled Moonlight Gram. It is the opening number off the six-track work and was written by the entire group. The video was directed by Hana Mendez and was released simultaneously with the release of limited edition vinyl copies of the EP.

Something Borrowed

This time around our “something borrowed” is ”All Shook Up.” The song was recorded by Elvis Presley and co-written with Otis Blackwell. \It was released as a single in 1957. This cover version is by the Brit band Rob Clarke And The Wooltones. It was recorded live on July 9th. 2017 at St Peter's Church, in Woolton, Liverpool with Colin Hanton of The Quarrymen. The track is included on the band’s 2018 album The Day John Met Paul 60th Anniversary.

Something Blue

Finally, our “something blue” this time is the new track “Blue Veil” by American singer-songwriter Julia A. Kasdorf. This timely track is off her upcoming album titled Motel which drops on May 14th.

It was recently heard on the progressive podcast "Best of the Left." Kasdorf recently commented on the new song saying: “I wrote ‘Blue Vei’ about four years ago. It's still wretchedly relevant, alas. My dearest dream is that this song would be reduced to a quaint anachronism, like gout and whalebone corsets. “
