Something in music: origin
One evening at a hot, trendy L.A. nightclub on a rare solo outing, yours truly found himself standing alone at the bar preparing to review the upcoming act. Before he had taken more than a few notes, however, he was bookended by a pair of vivacious vixens who insisted on engaging your rockin’ writer in cozy conversation. Strangely, the subject of “marriage” arose.
One of the young ladies noted that when a gal is about to get hitched she needs “something old, something new, something borrowed and something blue.” Your provocative penman was immediately inspired. After all, those very same terms could be applied to music too: “Something old” or classic, “something new” or recently released, “something borrowed” (a cover), and “something blue” (a blues song or a song with “blue” in the title.) The rest is history.
Something Old
Our “something old'' this edition is the classic cut
"I Want You to Want Me” by the American rock group Cheap Trick. The tune first appeared on their 1977 platter *In Color. The erosion here is from the and’s most popular platter, Cheap Trick at Budokan.
A live version of "I Want You to Want Me" from the 1979 album Cheap Trick at Budokan.
Something New
Our “something new” this edition is the new music video “Stronger” by Kelly's Lot. Singer-songwriter Kelly Zirbes spoke of the song on video on social media. She said the video “sends a message we can all relate to.”
The song is “the first track on the upcoming Kelly's Lot album, Where and When, an acoustic collection of original and traditional blues songs recorded in an old fashioned way, in a circle and live to tape.” The track features Zirbes on lead vocals, producer Perry Robertson on rhythm guitar, co-producer Doug Pettibone on lead guitars, and David Grover on stand-up bass.
The disc drops June 2021 and “is their first album to focus only on the blues with 6 originals and 5 covers of [songs by] Howlin’ Wolf, Ma Rainey, Robert Johnson, and Lovie Austin.” The upcoming release “presents these songs with a historic flavor and a Kelly’s Lot/Pettibone twist.”
Something Borrowed
This time around our “something borrowed” is "Badge." It was written by Eric Clapton and George Harrison and was originally included on the 1969 platter Goodbye by the British group Cream.
This live version is by the California-based band The Renegades. Their roster includes: Gordon Campbell on lead vocals, Mike Dierkes on guitar, Darryl Froman on guitar, Joe Rumney om drums, Dustin Hopkins on bass, and René Mente on keys. This performance was recorded in 2017 at the famous Main Street Restaurant in
Yorba Linda, California.
Something Blue
Finally, our “something blue” this time is the song “Riding the Blues” by Snowy White and The White Flames. The track is off the group’s Realistic which was released in 2011.
