#7 Fine Arts Center 1998 WaaSylla Drummers FOTOKOTABAH

in #music5 years ago

Fotokotabah, a rhythm originating in the Great Malian Empire, metamorphosed over the generations. During their time in Senegal the WaaSylla drummers were taught that this rhythm originally celebrated the healthy return of young boys from the bush after their rite of passage into manhood and the compulsory circumcision that went along with it. Celebrations being one of the favorite pass-times of West Africans, Fotokotabah easily lent itself to welcoming new people to a different village and later like a favorite song on the radio "Kotabah" became the farmer's choice to help the work go by with ease. This rhythm features Anabela Osavio Crooks of the Sankofa Dancers in Colorado Springs, Farai Malianga and DeAndre Carroll from Boulder Colorado Harambee dancers.

Oh, that is so very addictive, @willowwisp! I love the beat and the way they play with wild abandon!

The dancers are amazing, aren't they and really let themselves go with the beat! Oh, I can say that the women are so much more wild and free than the men! They can move, but she is so fluid in her movements.

Love this!
