Music and daily life - my take.steemCreated with Sketch.

in #music8 years ago (edited)

While preparing my daily fresh juice this morning i was listening to one of my playlists when a certain tune came up. It is one of the most 'listenable' songs I have ever come across, and as that thought came up I started thinking about how music plays such a part in my daily life. Music for listening, music for outdoors and exercise, music for dancing and music for seduction are just some of the ways that sprang to mind.

That all set me thinking about my favorites in each category and I start of with four of favorite 'listening' artists, hardly an easy task as I love a wide variety of music and so much is dictated by the space I am in at the time.

Steve Winwood - Arc of a Diver

Magnificent, brilliant goose bump music for me... the musical arrangements, the lyrics and just the way the whole song fits together. I had the vinyl once upon a time and the quality of the sound was tremendous. It is also the song that got me thinking about this post.

Donald Fagan - Nightfly
I could have chosen any track from The Nightfly album as this must be one of the most listenable albums ever (yes, yes, yes.... I know...subjective...but this is my subjective and my story). I learnt to love this album many years ago when I used to walk up and down Commissioner Street in Johannesburg, vinyl under my arm on a hunt for the perfect sound system to fit my clients budget. In those days the audio shops had 'sound labs' where one could listen to the different components together.
Now Infinity speakers with a tandberg amp and a linn sondek turntable.. nope, too bright. Swop the Infinitys for B&W's ... still too bright and shaky bass... okay try the Technics SLK1800 turntable etc. etc. etc.
Over and over listening to the same album at each dealer, then negotiate prices, add my service charge and another happy client {smile}

Carole King - Tapestry

Once, amid the soft, silver sadness in the sky,
There came a man of fortune, a drifter passing by.
He wore a torn and tattered cloth around his leathered hide,
And a coat of many colors, yellow, green on either side.
He moved with some uncertainty, as if he didn't know
Just what he was there for, or where he ought to go.
Once he reached for something golden, hanging from a tree,
And his hand came down empty.

How many winter evenings have I snuggled up on the couch with a glass of red wine, a book and Carole playing at a 'just so' volume? Too many to mention... I just love this album.

And the final one for the listening category ..... another female artist who I have listened to for the last four decades.

Joni Mitchell - Both Sides Now

I hope reading this post and listening to the music inspired you to think about how music has influenced your moods, assigned itself to memories, places and occasions through the years.

I will cover my other 'categories' later or over the next few days... I need to go through my music collection

Thanks for reading!!
