[SONG ANALYSIS/REVIEW] Spring Fever by Tiny Moving Parts

in #music7 years ago

Title: Spring Fever
Artist: Tiny Moving Parts
Album: Pleasant Living
Genre: Emo/Punk/Mathrock

Do you think about love?
Do you ever wonder where it comes from?
A clear vision, you're far too stubborn to witness yourself sick
Its chemicals mixing a special escape
From selfishness
You're so sick
You're so sick
You're so sick
You're so, sick
In a mid-west mindset of a blind lost best friend
You keep moving onward, and never looked back (and never looked back)
In a mid-west mindset of a blind lost best friend
You keep moving onward, and leave what you had, to leave what you had
You fell in love with bridges but never touched the water
You fell in love with gardens but never touched a flower
You fell in love with spring but never watched the snow melt
You fell in love with everyone else except yourself
And I’m so sorry
Chemicals, mixing
Chemicals, mixing
Do you think about love?
Do you?

Summary/Analysis

Spring Fever is a poetically appealing piece. It is a masterpiece created by the emo-punk/mathrock trio Tiny Moving Parts. In a second person’s point-of-view, the singer is trying to make the first person understand the concept of love as something tangible yet understood as an abstract concept. The first person seemed to have been caught up with the idea that love is just something to be be felt internally, a form of selfish act. Assuming that love is a universal concept, the song isn’t only relevant for the lost and troubled souls, it can also be a platform for introspective communication; a trigger for the “big picture” to realize this particular phenomenon (that love and romance is dying). It can be a vital part in the post-modern revolution.

Since the basic message of the song is somewhat hidden behind its aesthetically appealing figures of speech, the lyrical content is quite challenging to decipher. Despite its gloomy tone, there’s a profound feeling once you have a clear picture of what the singer is trying to say. At least that’s how I felt when I first realized the message it was trying to transmit. As a product of the post-modern revolution, the lyrics can also be reflected as the social tone during the modern era, since the idea of love and romance was slowly drifting away from the tides of the so called “modern mindset”.

Midwest emo, as an offspring of emotional hardcore from the hardcore punk scene of Washington DC in the late 70’s, has exponentially grown diverse and independent over time. Tiny Moving Parts has also embraced the ethos of the said music scene and strayed away from its own path itself. Fusing emotional and melodic lyricism with odd time signatures, progressive shifting of varying meters and an oddly appealing manner of clean and screaming vocals, the band is undoubtedly very diverse and independently fresh from its own origins. It keeps the ethos and influences evident in their sound, creating a precisely clever craftsmanship. Majority of their listeners are underground music enthusiasts and followers like themselves, particularly people revolving around pop punk, post-hardcore, melodic hardcore, emo, mathrock, indie, progressive rock, etc. The most dominant impression you could come up with the whole concept of the band judging from their first album Waves Rise, Waves Recede, The Ocean Is Full Of Waves up to the latest LP Celebrate is basically emo.
