The next "Greats" in Rap

in #music7 years ago

Every hip hop post I see on here is about old school rap, so I thought it's time to show my generation some love. Every generation leaves us with widely agreed upon "greats" from Rakim to Kanye West, the genres come a long way. My question today is, when it's all said and done who will the greats from this generation be? These aren't my personal favorite artists, they're just my predictions on who time will treat the most fondly. Mark my words, in the next 10 years we'll be telling the kids about when rap used to be "good" and how wack their favorite artists are. The cycle's only going to repeat. This will only be multiplied 10 times over if any of these artists meet an early death.

#5. Migos

The Migos definitely aren't my favorite rappers (Even if Quavo is the best damn hook man in years), but one day they're going to get the credit they deserve for influencing the way 90% of these rappers rhyme. Regardless of whether or not they actually created the "Migos flow" they popularized it, and it's called the motherfucking Migos flow for a reason. Especially lately, these guys have some serious momentum and their star power is only increasing. Just watch, they're going to be one of the most memorable acts of the 2010s.

#4. Future

Futures influence is simply undeniable at this point. No matter how much I hate his music, I think it's definitely going to stand the test of time. The drawback of him releasing so much is that I don't think any of his projects past DS2 are really going to be talked about as a complete body of work in the future (heh), but his singles and influence on all the (trash ass) rappers who came after him will be impossible to refute. He even gave us the hottest song of 2016! Panda! Wait... that wasn't him was it? Ah shit. What about Timmy Turner? THAT WASN'T HIM EITHER? ASDHADOJDWPOIDJ

#3. J Cole

Say what you want about Cole. His last project might have been boring as all hell, and he may have the tendency to come off as a diet version of Kendrick or Drake on any given track. But his fanbase is there, the hits are there, and he can actually rap. Just remember, J Cole went DOUBLE PLATINUM WITH NO FEATURES. HE'S THE GOAT!!!! Not really, but even if that accolade is thrown around way too much, it is an accomplishment. The people care about what the man has to say, not about any bangers he might make. I think J Cole will go down as the connective link between the likes of Kendrick/Chance/Joey/Logic (The lyricists) and the likes of Drake/Tory Lanez/PND/Bryson Tiller (The simps).

#2. Drake

These next two are no brainers, and probably who most rap fans would think of when reading the title of this post. Drake has by far the most hits of this generation, and embodies the simp movement which has become so rampant in todays climate. He even makes hype music, for this reason I think he'll be remembered for being more diverse of an artist than he actually is, a two trick pony. At least that's what he's become. Regardless, his popularity will definitely ensure he won't be forgotten anytime soon, and time will only give him more of an impact.

#1. Kendrick Lamar

There's simply no question that Kendrick is going to be remembered as the best lyricist of this generation, and may even be inserted into the 'all time' conversation depending on who's having it. Like Kanye did before him, he's reinvented his sound with every new project, only solidifying his legacy and adding to the enigma that is Kendrick Lamar. He showed these upcoming artists that you can still spit and make waves, and we're already hearing his influence in the half of upcoming artists opposite the likes of 21 Savage, Kodak Whack, Lil Uzi etc.

Sort:

Spot on list in my opinion (even though I think Cole is better than Drake, but Drake is most definitely more influential). Dope post man.

I think Cole is definitely a better MC, but lately I've enjoyed Drakes music more.

Drake's music is just so diverse, trendy and progressive, he really pushes the hip hop genre to new levels with each new album. More Life, Culture, XO TOUR Llif3, and probably still One Dance, is all you're gonna hear at parties and the beach this summer.
