Sing With Me : Clear Sky

Today I'm attempting a song that will be very familiar to fellow Chinese people, but perhaps even familiar to those that loosely follow some Chinese pop classics. The song name is called Clear Sky (晴天) and written and sung by the now world wide famous pop star, Jay Chou.

Jay Chou is an artist that needs no introduction, originally from Taiwan, he has dominated the Asian music industry for much of the last two decades and pretty much every body under the age of 30 grew up listening to his songs. He has written songs for nearly all of the famous artists in Asia and is widely considered the King of Asian Pop, even appearing in Time Magazine reaffirming his status as a prime influencer of pop culture in Asia.

His music was a refreshing new take on pop utilising many western styles infused with the pentatonic style of Chinese music. He is a very diverse composer that has very sound classical background in many instruments, most notably the Piano and Cello but also likes to mix traditional Chinese instruments into his music.

Aside from singing, he's also quite an accomplished actor having appeared in several Chinese movies such as Initial D, Curse of the golden flower, and Secret. Most impressively, he's also starred alongside Seth Rogen and Christoph Waltz in the Hollywood movie The Green Hornet and recently had a supporting role in the movie Now You See Me 2.

The song i'm singing today is one of his earliest works, originally released in his 4th Album in 2003, named after his mother. The melody is very soothing and lyrics recount the feeling of falling in love under a clear sky, and how it changes as the seasons pass and weather brings the love to a close. A sad story in the end, but beautifully told with progressive intensity in both the lyrics and music.

It reminds me of my own feelings falling in love, and the stages it goes through ultimately winding down in conclusion. Since this song was released when I was still very young, it took me many years of listening (and growing up!) to really appreciate it. I hope I do the song justice and you enjoy another Chinese classic!
