The ethical dilemma you will face if you want to make a living off music

in #music7 years ago

First so you know I am not totally pulling this out of my ass I have been involved in music for the last 25 years. I have got to play shows in the USA and around Europe. I have also started my own band written, recorded and produced my own album.Which was released on a really small label on vinyl. I still play music to this day and love it and one of the reasons for this is that I pretty much make whatever music I feel like making.

This is a statement that is banded a lot but when you get down to it people are still trying to make money and get their friends to come to every single show(and they don't care). Making money is not a problem we all want some money that's part of the reason we on here , however if you have watched too many rockumentaries and now think you going to move to New York , London or Los Angeles those and make it, those days are gone. Furthermore if you want to make a living from music you have to be nice to everyone and love everyone's bands. All this crap that is the antithesis of being an individual and making music cause you hate the status quo (literal phrase intended not the band).

I am not saying you have to be an asshole to everybody I am just saying its impossible to be nice to everybody. This is pretty much the price you have to pay to get to the upper echelons of rock stardom. You got to be nice to everybody and everybody will be nice to you. Having to endure this would drive me mental and the state of music would just plateau like a never ending Kenny G jam. Now we move onto this guy.

Exhibit A: The nicest guy you never met

Now I know this is a contentious issue and I am sure most people got laid cause they put on "Everlong " or played it on guitar. However this dude is so fucking nice and annoying. Now I am sure if I met him and had some beers at the bar I would be like this dudes alright but the problem is I never hear him complain about anything that is too contentious , except for something that makes him look cool. "ABBA fucking rules dude!!!!" he exclaims as he puts his long rock hair behind his ears, for the umpteenth time and smiles that thousand yard smile.

I think GWAR summed it up best (skip to for the 1:58 Dave Grohl bit). They also make a great statement about the Grammys shit show.

Unfortunately the next link for this video is Dave acknowledging this link and saying how awesome it is ......oohhh he is so nice I could choke him .

In conclusion I think Dave Grohl is nice, but a nice dickhead, like the friend you like because he has cash but is actually pretty annoying. If you want to make it in the music business practice getting along with everyone you meet . If you want to make good music have a look around at whats pissing you off ,socially, politically, bands making bad music and write about it. People will think your a cynical asshole but you will be an honest asshole.

P.S: don't kill me Dave Grohl fan club I liked Nirvana and the first Foo Fighters single.
