[MUSIC REVIEW] Why Love Now (2017) by Pissed Jeans
There are few bands that so consistently sound just like themselves. Pissed Jeans from Pennsylvania has pumped out a sludge-like pastiche of post-punk and hardcore on five albums the last thirteen years and they manage to be more relevant, dangerous and angry than all their colleagues, seemingly without very much effort.
Their fifth album, "Why Love Now", is sonically more refined but still has the same mix of anger, Lydia Lunch (who's also the producer of the album) and Birthday Party, noise, chaos and frenzy. It starts off as a steroid-fueled Tom Waits accompanied by an unrehearsed Black Flag. The album is then abruptly interrupted by the somewhat surreal spoken word piece "I'm A Man". Otherwise it's noise, punk, sludge and post punk for you with a strong heart and a nerve of steel.
"Worldwide Marine Asset Financial Analyst" hasn't just got the most complicated title of the album, but also the most breakneck pace. Other songs deal with relationship problems or anxiety in the search for tumors. But even in such anguished moments Pissed Jeans conveys pleasure. "Why Love Now" is a somewhat crazy bundle of energy of politically charged punk rock full of painful screams, sometimes hard to bear, but so absurd, dynamic and unpredictable that escape seems impossible.
