[MUSIC REVIEW] I-Optikon (2016) by SYK - Progressive Metal From Italy
In this first post as an official Dolphin 🐬 (yaaay!) I will review one of the albums from last year that I didn't have time to get to until now.
SYK is something as unique as an Italian progressive metal band. "I-Optikon" is their second album and was produced by Phil Anselmo (Pantera) and released on his House Core Records. The music is quite complex and has obvious similarities with Meshuggah. "I-Optikon" is packed with jagged, sullen riffs that are heavier than the sun, extremely virtuosic drumming, unorthodox song structures and an intense madness that never falters. On top of all this hovers the voice of Dalila Kayros; a most peculiar vocalist that resembles a roaring Björk that has been possessed by demons. She has also released two brilliant solo albums that are very much reminiscent of Greek-american avant-garde soprano Diamanda Galás. For those who have read this far and are curious, I definitely recommend checking out SYK and "In-Optikon". It should be noted that all these characteristics that make SYK completely unique, probably also are likely to deter a lot of people and it's foremost an album for fans of experimental metal. Unlike Meshuggah's compositions that despite their tricky riffs are based on the standard 4/4 beat and include a decent portion of melody and nuance, SYK does the opposite with more and trickier beats shifts, less melody, more noise and an almost merciless onslaught. The result is songs that can be difficult to grasp, but this is the case with most avant-garde art: it's not easy to digest but those who give it time will be rewarded. A rough diamond well worth seeking out.
