General facts about music - Blues part 1

The blues has its roots in a clash of two cultures. While American immigrants could look back on the tradition of European music with its rich harmony, there is no harmony in the true sense in traditional African music. It consists mainly of melodies, which are composed of pentatonic scales. This minor oriented melody finally came up against a harmonic that moves mainly in the major tonal space. The third and seventh of the pentatonic did not really want to fit into the major chord, on the other hand the pentatonic no longer sounds round if one simply exchanges the corresponding notes for those of the major scale. So they undecidedly oscillated between the two notes (3/b3 and 7 / maj7) and finally ended up somewhere in the middle. The resulting nuances, which are slightly deeper than 3 or maj7, are traditionally referred to as blue notes.
