Track of the day. Amient wet dreams, by The ten year program

in #music5 years ago

With the release of their self-titled EP, The Ten Year Program takes the best parts of a few classic genres and breeds a sound all their own. Lush with hard hitting progressions, an edgy songwriting style, and an honest, upfront lyrical approach, the record boasts the aesthetic of alternative rock anthems.

The first single, “Ambien Wet Dreams”, grabs with its infectious intro, riddled with ambient synth work and progressive drumming, letting you know things are about to get intense, followed quickly by its passionate vocals, providing the songs main hook with major pop sensibility. Most important though, is the songs ability to build and breathe as it plays on- a signature of TYP’s sound throughout the EP.

“’Ambien Wet Dreams’ captures TYP’s epic sound perfectly, marked by layered guitars, atmospheric synths, layered vocals and a generally large sound, but it also serves as the most upbeat song on the EP. It will give listeners the perfect taste of what’s on the EP, but with slightly more pop appeal. “It is a love song; like when life feels so good you can’t sleep… it doesn’t get any better than that”, explains the songwriter Ian Richards of the single’s lyrics and mood of the song.

Although the singles do speak volumes for the EP, to get a real understanding for where The Ten Year Program is coming from, it should be heard in its entirety.

“I have always enjoyed writing songs that sounded big. I like writing songs that I think people will want to hear while still staying true to my vision as an artist. TYP marks the first time that as a songwriter, I was able to match my musical vision with my expectations of the final product. And I think that comes off in the sound of the EP. TYP doesn’t sound like any other band, it doesn’t sound like anything you can really name. Yes, it’s alternative rock of some scope, but ultimately it’s our musical vision as artists; it’s our unique take on alternative rock.”, says Richards about creating the record.

Press Release:

The Ten year Program is a project brought to fruition by two longtime friends and musical partners. Ian Richards who produced engineered, wrote, and recorded the music, and Jack McCracken who sings on all the songs. Having a wide range of musical influence, including bands like Glassjaw, Deftones, and Far, helped lay the stepping stones for some of the music while having others like Sunny Day Real Estate, Pearl Jam and early Jimmy Eat World push through as counterpoints. Having a dynamic and emotional vocal style enables the band’s sound to have a unique flavor all of its own. “One of my priorities in producing the EP was

to flesh out the melodies and perfect the harmonies in the studio. I believe as a producer, that the vocals are really the most important thing, and I made a conscious effort to make sure that Jack had the time to work through his melodies and harmonies, and deliver a performance on each song which best captured his intent and emotions while adding another layer to the sound we were going for as a whole”, says Richards.

Richards and McCracken met in their high school years and started collaborating musically when they started their first punk rock band dubbed “The Machine”. The two realized straight on that there was something special in the seamless way they were able to work together on a musical level, and went on to record two records produced by Chad Ginsburg of CKY. After some success, they decided to move on to new things and put together a new band with friends Sean McGuigan and Colin Frangicetto (now of Circa Survive fame). After some time, the project dissipated due to Colin focusing on other projects.

From there, the two moved on to work in several other projects including a band called Drive Without; working with NY hardcore legend Sammy Siegler on a 5 song EP, which Sammy produced and helped engineer. Eventually this project too broke up after some time leaving Ian frustrated. Not only due to the eventual dissipation and break up of projects and bands, but also because he felt that many of these projects didn’t allow him to have the creative control he really wanted.

Finally, he decided to create a project that allowed him to write music the way he wanted. Armed with years of experience in writing, and recording, Ian put together songs and reached out to Jack for vocals. This was to be a two man project with no interference. It was then that The Ten year Program was finally born.

The Self titled release is a testament to where they are at with their sound right now.

The Ten year Program will be available for streaming and downloads on most major digital outlets in December and the band is already working on new material for future releases.

Ambien Wet Dreams (First Single)

Lyrics:

Ambien Wet Dreams

It’s been a long quiet drive home from where I have just been

The lights, the roads – familiar once seem almost foreign to me

So as the dashboard shines a moment that I think I’ve seen

A flash – a sound – a distance not so far off

Not so far off

And then the clarity in me rolls up playing dead

Enough sun gets through

For me to hear the voices singing – turn to scream back

This is all that I can take

I’ve never known much more than that, but now…

You’re louder than ever before

These are the pills I take to fall asleep

I’m not as restless as you think that I should be

I am numb, silent – motionless with hands folded over me

These are the pills I take to fall asleep

I am numb…

The second time around is always better than you thought it would be

Her eyes are brighter than the stars

Just like in that movie with the song that moves me – I hear it playing

This is all that I can take

I’ve never known much more than that, but now…

You’re louder than ever before

These are the pills I take to fall asleep

I’m not as restless as you think that I should be

I am numb, silent – motionless with hands folded over me

These are the pills I take to fall asleep

I am numb

It’s been a long quiet drive home from where I have just been

The lights, the roads – familiar once seem almost foreign to me

So as the dashboard shines a moment that I think I’ve seen

A flash – a sound – a distance not so far off

Not so far off

This is all that I can take

I’ve never known much more than that, but now…

You’re louder than ever before

These are the pills I take to fall asleep

I’m not as restless as you think that I should be

I am numb, silent – motionless with hands folded over me

These are the pills I take to fall asleep

I am numb

A Double Shot for One

I can see you through the dim lighting that my corner provides

Shuffling cigarettes through your ever once trembling hands

Every story that I’ve ever told started just like this

So as the glass hits my dried lips –

I will drink alone (alone)

I can hear laughter through the jukebox as it’s playing your song

Squinting through my eyes over the rims of my crooked glasses

Every story that I’ve ever heard, it ended just like this

So as the song fades to silence –

I will sing, sing to you baby

I will drink alone and sing to you

So as the song fades to silence –

I will sing, sing to you baby

Sing to you baby

So as the song fades to silence –

I will sing, sing to you baby

A Drop on the Tip of Your Tongue

Goodnight, angel

You don’t look as innocent now that the day has treated you well

And I hope this letter folded into corners finds you sitting all by yourself

Cause I’ve torn up fourteen before this one captured my words perfectly until –

Another comes to mind

You should pay homage to what I’ve done

Try slipping into something more comfortable than me

Pull down your offerings

I’ll never accept a thing from you now that this is all I have

And I hope this letter folded into corners finds you sitting all by yourself

(Or your dead relationships)

Cause I’ve torn up fourteen before this one captured my words perfectly until –

Another comes to mind

You should pay homage to what I’ve done

Try slipping into something more comfortable than me

You’ll see places and seem just fine

You’ll never have anything more comfortable than me

(You’re comfortable, comfortable…)

You should pay homage to what I’ve done

Try slipping into something more comfortable than me

You’ll see places and seem just fine

You’ll never have anything more comfortable than me
