Simple formula to automatically generate bebop lines

in #music7 years ago

This is my attempt to sum up the formula presented here:

The context here is improvising bebop jazz over two beats with chord number one, before moving on to the next chord (chord number two). Alt the notes are eighth notes, which mean we'll be playing four tones over chord number one before moving on to chord number two.

This is the formula (the numbers in the list corresponds to the eight notes played over the beats:

  1. Chord tone of chord number one
  2. Move either upwards or downwards (preferably a second or thirds) in a diatonic motion using the scale corresponding to the chord
  3. Here we have two options:
    1. Create a simple diatonic motion just like for the second note, i.e. a diatonic second up or down from the second note
    2. Half step above or below the fourth note
    3. Neighbor tone concept: If the fourth note is a half step above note five, we'll play a half step below. If the fourth note is a half step below note five, we'll play a half step above.
  4. Half step above or below the fifth note
  5. Chord tone of chord number two

Hopefully this sums up the formula correctly.

I'm trying to get into bebop, so I wrote this as a reference for myself. Please feel free to post a comment to other resources for learning bebop.
