I'm thinking great gear is something that's more important for the player than the listener. The avarage listener won't hear the difference anyway. But for the player, it means the world - if you get that great sound from the great gear, you find some deep inspiration that will lead you to play things you wouldn't play otherwise.

You can still sound great with less than optimal gear, but you might never get those sounds that take you to the next creative level.
