Kendrick Lamar has always been known for his ability to illustrate a journey through his lyrics. Money Trees, one of his biggest hits, explained how easily someone can be corrupted by money, and how it would lead most people astray from what is truly important from life.

He starts off the song with a tone that represents him talking to the audience, bringing the audience insight to the life he came up from. Being raised in lower income regions, crime and drugs were the norm to most of the residents. Bringing us back to his teenage years, Kendrick brings us the image of how he use to hangout with his friends, and how they’d resolve or even something start, conflicts. The song then takes a darker tone as Kendrick proceeds to explain how money changes everything around him, clouding people that he knew and morphing them into somebody materialistic.

The chorus brings a sense of melancholic irony to the audience, as it contrasts with how simple life was in the verse; now, Kendrick explains in the chorus that the best way to be safe is actually to be shaded by a Money Tree (being rich will keep you safe). This is a song definitely worth checking out, especially if anyone is into hiphop and
wants to know more about the culture behind it.
