War and Music

All of the composers and their works are incredible and it was tough to decipher who did a better job portraying what they wanted the audience to hear. After the having some good time breaking them down in the listening journal I came to the conclusion that Messiaen did the best job in sharing what they tried to achieve in writing their music, although I think there is no right answer because I very well could have chosen the others under different circumstances as Penderecki’s Threnody for the Victims of Hiroshima is frightful and disturbing and the structure of the strings brings chills to your skin. To me, Messiaen revealed a sort of mystical nature in his rhythms and melodies that are similar to ones found in nature. Symbolically I think this says a lot about the kind of person Messiaen was. It’s safe for me to say he has an appreciation for our natural world and is able to hear minute sounds from the wild others often don’t pick up. I am a big fan of natural music and consider it a positive beneficial ecological service provided by our forests and natural ecosystems. As this is my major, it was really insightful to think about the cultural and music side of nature and our environment. The music must be listened to numerous times to fully take in all that it has to offer which is one of the things that set it apart from the others to me. Musically, it begins with the clarinet and violin competing against the piano and cello competing to see who could be more vocal like tropical songbirds bathing in the sun in the canopies of the trees. You can sense a feeling of urgency and importance in the playing Sunday are seemingly important calls but yet relaxing and peaceful as what you think in a movie scene of a sunday walk in the woods. If you close your eyes and quiet your mind you can see where he's taking you with his song. It seems to dance along with the birds seemingly following behind you switching or changing pitch slightly like every call is slightly different than the last. Maybe this is the musicians or how he envisioned it. It features a clarinet, piano, and the violin and cello of all interrupt each other while the piano plays its background sequence. There are many different sets or movements with different structures, tones, and melodies. Each seemingly playing on the one before and flowing like a story or a river. It plays on the effect of eternity.
