Hi Owen,
Yeh ... quality sounds is a life essential! For every day listening i use the Twelve South Bass jump2 Portable Subwoofer For Mac computers : Ebay link for info
The bass jump is supercool - it gets its power and runs off USB - sadly Mac only at this stage.
An alternative for ALL PC and Mac lovers is to get a super cheap usb sound card for about a tenner (or dust off an unused one lying gathering dust on a shelf!) then run your system speakers and a subwoofer from the external sound card which is run as an aggregate sound driver - aggregating audio interfaces with mac and windows.
When i need mission critical audio i use my trusty Beyerdynamic DT250 Headset - My usual monitors are Mackie HR824 MK1 they are gorgeous but i have moved to the jungle and had to leave them behind!
