Traditional Acehnese Musical Instruments
Aceh is a province of Indonesia which situated in the west of Indonesia region. The province that is known as the city of Serambi Mekkah (Mecca Portico) have so many lovely cultures. One of the great cultures is the traditional musical instruments which will be discussed in this writing. below are seven Traditional Acehnese Musical Instruments.
- ARBAB
Arbab is a traditional musical instrument of Aceh which generated from nature. This musical instrument is made from coconut shell, goatskin, wood and string, while its arc bow is derived from wood, rattan and fiber plants. At the moment, Arbab which before developed in Pidie, Great Aceh and West Aceh is reported almost extinct.
- BANGSI ALAS
Bangsi Alas is one of Acehnese traditional musical instruments. The instrument which derived from bamboo could be found in Alas region, Southeast of Aceh. In addition, Bangsi is also reported has already extinct since it is quite hard to find this kind of wind instrument at the moment.
- CANANG
Canang is also part of Acehnese Traditional Musical Instrument. This kind of musical instrument is frequently played in Gayo, Tamiang and Alas region of Aceh. canang is derived from brass and its shape is almost similar to Tinkling. Besides, Canang could be found in all Aceh regions.
- GEUNDRANG
Geundrang is a kind of Acehnese Traditional musical instrument which its way of playing is by hitting the instrument by hands or by wood bat. The instrument could be found in Great Aceh and also in Pidie and North Aceh.
- SERUNEE KALEE
Serunee Kalee is a type of traditional wind instruments which has been played centuries ago in Aceh. the instrument could be found in Pidie, Nort Aceh, Great Aceh and West Aceh. In addition, some said that this instrument come from China and at the moment, Serunee Kalee is still used and played in art shows and some other important events.
- TAKTOK TRIENG
Taktok Trieng is an acehnese traditional musical instrument which derived from bamboo. The instrument has two types. The first type is set in porch and the last type is put in rice field to cast out birds from eating rice or paddies.
- RAPAI
Rapai is the last acehnese traditional musical instrument which still used and played at the moment. Based on some opinions, rapai is comes from Baghdad brought by religion sender called Sheik Rapi. Moreover, the instrument is played by eight to twelve people in a show. The players are called Awak Rapai (Rapai players)
