A lot of good points for someone just trying to get started. There are a ton of variables tho and unfortunately most of them will have be learned as it happens if it happens. Never do a verbal aggreement with the venue. You will get burned. For the most part people think the band can survive on 50 bucks or nothing.

I actually run a consultation program for musicans. It helps them learn how to use contracts and further push what is taught here. Unfortunately yes I agree, it takes getting burned to learn. Avoiding certain things and just trying to figure out what works best for your situation and location. Its always a different story. Although using these guidelines will help you, it wont teach you what to avoid.

Too many people think that a musician is just some guy playing a guitar. They will come up and say hey look at the exposure if you come play for free for me. There is a whole lot more to playing a show than just going up and strumming your guitar. Playing those gigs for free also takes the reality of anyone else getting paid right out of the picture,...
