Music Is STEM
S - Music is a Science; the suffixed "musicology" refers to the "SCIENCE of Music."
T - The "T" of STEM represents "Technology"; music is an art, and one of the ancient Greek words for "ART" is "TECHNE" which also means "craft." Music is that, too.
E - What is Engineering, if it is not the 'application of scientific knowledge to solving problems in the real world." A composer-orchestrator is therefore a 'musical ENGINEER," solving complex problems involving time (rhythm and meter), pitch, musical harmony, counterpoint, and tone color. A musician who realizes, interprets and otherwise performs such a complex piece of notated music likewise possesses comparable “real world” skills.
M - Mathematics is the 'science that deals with the logic of shape, quantity and arrangement.' Therefore, MUSIC involves complex MATH calculations, far beyond basic arithmetic. (See above, too).
Well, there you have it! STEM - SCIENCE, TECHNOLOGY, ENGINEERING, MATH - The logical conclusion? MUSIC IS A STEM FIELD!!!
But wait; there is more!
MUSIC is a not merely a STEM field, but MUSIC COMBINES ALL THE OTHER STEM FIELDS TOGETHER INTO ONE DISCIPLINE. What do you think of that?!
MUSIC IS STEM. (That bore repeating!)
FOOD FOR THOUGHT: DOES YOUR favorite university offer a comprehensive music program? Why not? Don’t they think STEM is important? Do you feel short-changed? You should!
