So it's the first week of the year and the Christmas songs are probably still ringing around you head. Well I have the answer! A selection of tracks to flush away the holiday tunes and wisk you away to a different place.

I'd love to hear your thoughts and recommendations too.

Anyway, with further ado, let's get started.

New Grass - Gacha Bakradze (Single)

Starting the new year off with a chilled track from Georgian music artist Gacha Bakradze. This Balearic infused record is simplistic in its approach with a single strumming guitar chord followed by a plucking riff over an atmospheric soundscape that will have you longing for the beach on your January commute.

Mutant Jazz - T-Power Vs. MK Ultra (Single)

Staying similar in approach but taking you back to 1994, this classic record eases you in until 01:35 when the laid back beat breaks into an old school, jazzy, drum n bass vibe with effects-laden synths, saxophone and even the odd panpipe.

Echo - Crazy P (Single)

Bringing things more up-to-date in 2015, Echo starts off by layering a flexing beat over a vocal style reminiscent of Moloko. It’s at the two minute mark when the bass drum stomps a beating House mix that I imagine would feel right at home pumping out of a droptop on a sunny coastal highway.

Lonely City - The Midnight (Single)

In the last few years there has steadily been a rise in 80s inspired electronic tracks, I believe largely inspired by the likes of the 2011 movie Drive. Popular currently leans into that era for inspiration, and I’m an absolute sucker for it. I can’t get enough.

You only have to look at The Midnight’s discography to see how their style is drenched in neon nostalgia, and that’s just from the art. Their unabashed embrace of the 80s is felt throughout and is sincere in its delivery, you just have to go with it.

24x33 - Betonkust, Palmbomen II (Single)

Ok, one more 80s infused electro track. This dreamy, lower-fi IDM record feels like it’s leaped straight out of a horror B-movie and into a Stranger Things playlist; trust me, that’s a positive.

Oh and make sure you check out the video for the full effect.

See You When You Get There - Session Victim (Album)

Session Victim are a House DJ duo from Germany have a distinct disco infused style of house music, and my album pick for this month it their 2014 outing See You When You Get There.

Opening with the soulful, percussion and keyboard led track Do It Now, the album starts with a sound reminiscent of Bob Sinclar's 1998 album Paradise, albeit a bit softer.

Hey Stranger then follows up after with a subdued soul funk guitar track and vocal sample that really eases you in and makes you feel you're in good hands.

Through the album the pair take the formula and expand on it by adding deeper beats, mixed percussion and soulful vocals and in some cases, such as Stick Together, it feels that the influences are far more exotic that one would expect from central Europe.

As you listen through the album the journey takes a detour with the more lyrical than sampled, Hyuwee, before heading back on track and building up to a deeper groove of Eo's Place. (This was actually a single pick in December 2017)

All in all an interesting and enjoyable album with a mixture of soul, percussion, laid-back beats and funky riffs. Check it out.
